Ex-aide to governors faces assault charges

RICHMOND — A former aide to three Virginia governors and current lobbyist for the Washington Redskins appeared in court Thursday on misdemeanor charges stemming from what his lawyer called a “tumultuous relationship.”

Eric Finkbeiner appeared in Chesterfield County General District Court on four charges of misdemeanor assault, and three charges of violation of a protective order. All but one of the cases involved Summer D. Hudson. One of the protective order cases involved someone named C.L. Williams.

The cases were continued until June 6 during Thursday’s court appearance, which was first reported by Richmond television station NBC12.

Finkbeiner did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

“It is very easy to get a warrant against someone in Virginia and that’s the reason people are presumed innocent at this stage,” said Todd B. Stone, Finkbeiner’s lawyer. “Fortunately Mr. Finkbeiner had the awareness and foresight to preserve a substantial amount of evidence during this tumultuous relationship and it will prove his innocence in a courtroom.”

Finkbeiner is a lawyer who served in the administrations of governors Robert F. McDonnell (R), George Allen (R) and Douglas Wilder (D). He was senior policy advisor for McDonnell before leaving his cabinet to join the law firm McGuireWoods in May 2011. He works as a lobbyist, representing the Redskins, helping to negotiate a deal last year to bring the team’s training camp to Richmond.
