A person was caught in machinery at the Government Printing Office on Tuesday, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
D.C. fire department spokesman Tim Wilson said that the victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition after the accident on the 700 block of North Capitol Street.
The Government Printing Office, with 1,900 employees, produces federal documents ranging from books to passports, according to its Web site. Spokesman Gary Somerset said that the injured employee was working at a machine called a baler, which packs used paper from all parts of the facility into bales that can be recycled.
Somerset said that fellow employees saw the man injure his hand and assisted him until emergency responders arrived. The Government Printing Office is trying to determine precisely what happened.
