A 19-year-old Loudoun man was killed Sunday after his motorcycle ran off the side of Route 9, struck an embankment and a utility pole, then caught fire, authorities said.

Muhammad Riaz of Round Hill, Va., was riding a 1999 Yamaha R6 about one mile west of Route 611 when the motorcycle left the roadway as it entered a curve shortly before 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Riaz, who was wearing a helmet, later died at Inova Loudoun Cornwall Hospital.

Speed was a factor in the crash, according to the Virginia State Police, who are investigating the incident.
