AlexRenew, Alexandria’s sewer utility, has cut its planned 11 percent rate increase to 6.6 percent for the upcoming year because of the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on local ratepayers.

The company said in a statement that the average residential customer could see an average bill increase of less than $3 per month with this change.

AlexRenew is in the middle of a major sewer-and-tunnel project required to clean the discharge into the Potomac River. It managed to cut the rate increase by deferring capital projects except for ones underway and those that support the river project, as well as by freezing pay increases for its employees, freezing hiring and reducing discretionary spending.
