The American Society of Anesthesiologists’ political action committee is spending $110,000 for radio ads in the region to boost state Del. Patrick Hope’s chances in the June 10 Democratic congressional primary in northern Virginia.
The PAC, based in Park Ridge, Ill., was the sole significant independent expenditure in the primary. Seven Democrats are vying to win the nomination and ultimately replace retiring Rep. James Moran (D).
Hope, a health-care attorney and lobbyist for the American College of Cardiology, reported $258,718 in campaign contributions, according to Federal Election Commission records released last week, far below front runner Don Beyer’s $1.1 million in contributions through May 21. Independent PACs are allowed to run ads on behalf of candidates as long as they do not coordinate them with the campaign.
