The online lottery for the popular White House Easter Egg Roll opens Wednesday.

According to the website www.recreation.gov, the lottery will open for people to get free tickets to the annual event. The Easter Egg Roll will be April 17, the day after Easter.

The lottery closes Saturday and results of who was selected for tickets will be posted March 31.

The Easter Egg Roll is divided into time slots and online lottery applicants can choose their first and second picks.

The opening of the lottery comes after weeks of some uncertainty. Few details had been released and little public preparation work had been done, including reaching out to the Maine company that makes the wooden eggs that are given to children who play on the White House lawn.

The event is considered one of the biggest public events at the White House. Last year, 35,000 parents and children attended.

The tradition of having the Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn goes back to 1878. Neighborhood children came on the Monday after Easter and rolled eggs and played.
