A woman gave birth to a baby Thursday morning on I-66 in Arlington.

The baby girl was delivered before emergency medical personnel and a Virginia State Police trooper arrived around 4:30 a.m., said Arlington County Fire Department Capt. Bill Shelton.

“The baby was already waiting when they got there,” he said.

The woman’s car was pulled over on a shoulder on the eastbound side of the highway just before Washington Boulevard, said Shelton.

Shelton said authorities arrived four minutes after an emergency call and helped cut the baby’s umbilical cord and take vitals. Mom and baby were taken to the hospital, he said.
