A 49-year-old woman was shot and killed Saturday morning on a Germantown street that curves through an apartment community.

Police say the woman may have been trying to cross the street, heading in the direction of a nearby convenience store. Exactly where she was going or why she was shot wasn’t known.

Capt. James Daly, a Montgomery County police spokesman, said the woman’s name likely would be released later Saturday after her family members were notified. He said the woman lived in the area.

Detectives are trying to find witnesses to the shooting and have no suspects.

“People were out and about,” Daly said, adding that investigators were conducting a door-to-door canvass.

About 7:45 a.m., several people called 911 to report gunshots, Daly said. Police arrived and found the woman on Crystal Rock Drive in the Hamptons apartment complex. Next to her were an umbrella and other personal belongings. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Daly said police have been called to the area in the past, but rarely for something this serious. “It was a very violent attack,” he said.

Residents expressed shock that the gunfire could erupt next to a tennis court and a community swimming pool and a spot where children play and ride their bikes.

“This whole thing, in total, is utterly insane,” said nearby resident Kristina Burroughs.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call police at 301-279-8000.
