A 77-year-old Silver Spring woman was killed by a SUV as she sat on a bus stop bench in the Wheaton-Glenmont area Thursday, Montgomery County police said.
The accident happened at the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Ferrara Avenue about 4:30 p.m., said Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman. Maria Lusminia Colindres, of the 3700 block of Delano Street, was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Police said the driver of a green Ford Explorer lost control of the SUV as she made a U-turn from the eastbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road. During the U-turn, the SUV struck a right-hand curb in the westbound lanes and the driver lost control, police said.
The Ford careened across three traffic lanes, hopped the median, then crossed three eastbound lanes before crashing into the bus shelter, police said.
Police shut down Veirs Mill Road in both directions at the scene for more than five hours. Officials said they are still investigating the cause of the crash.
