As the delta variant swept across the country this summer, unvaccinated adolescents were hospitalized with covid-19 at 10 times the rate of fully vaccinated adolescents, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released Friday.

Here’s what to know

  • As the delta variant spreads, scientists are investigating another coronavirus variant known as mu, which was designated by the World Health Organization as a “variant of interest” earlier this week. Anthony S. Fauci, the country’s top infectious-disease expert, said that the variant was not an “immediate threat” while adding that “we’re keeping a very close eye on it.”
  • Britain is sending 4 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine to Australia in a swap deal, with Australia agreeing to return the same number of doses to the United Kingdom later this year. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said receiving the extra doses now could “bring forward significantly the opportunity for Australia to open up again.”
  • Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is set to step down after just one year in office, saying he intends to focus on tackling the coronavirus crisis instead. Suga’s approval ratings have plummeted over his handling of the country’s response to the pandemic.
