HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — The suspect accused of killing seven people at two farms was believed to be a co-worker of the victims, officials said Tuesday, describing the attack as “workplace violence.”

Details about what happened on Monday were slow to emerge, as authorities worked to reach the victims’ families and to further investigate ahead of a planned Wednesday arraignment for the suspect, 66-year-old Zhao Chunli of Half Moon Bay.

Zhao worked at Mountain Mushroom Farm, one of the two places he allegedly killed people. He is believed to have acted alone in the shootings, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said at a news conference Tuesday.

Five men and two women were killed at the two farms, officials clarified Tuesday afternoon. Officials have not yet released the names of the victims.

A man who was being treated for life-threatening injuries at Stanford Medical Center is in stable condition, Corpus said Tuesday.

Responding to a question about firearm restrictions, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) called on Republicans in Washington to pass tougher gun-control measures. “One state can’t do it alone,” the governor said.

It was the second mass killing in California in three days that took the lives of Asian Americans at Lunar New Year, leaving the state shaken.
