Six-foot storm surge causes flooding at Port Lavaca

At Port Lavaca, Tex., substantial storm surge flooding has resulted as water levels rose at least six feet above normally dry land.

But exactly how big the storm surge was in surrounding coastal areas and how extensive the resulting damage has been are difficult questions to answer. “There are few real-time water level obs[ervations] near Harvey’s landfall,” tweeted Michael Lowry, a hurricane specialist at the University Center for Atmospheric Research. “It’ll likely take weeks before we know the full extent of the storm.”
