Irma makes landfall at Marco Island

The center of Hurricane Irma made landfall at Marco Island off the southwest coast of Florida at 3:35 p.m. as a Category 3 hurricane, the National Hurricane Center announced.

Authorities are warning people in the surrounding area, which includes the city of Naples, not to venture outside during the calm at the eye of the storm.

Wind gusts of 130 mph have been recorded on Marco Island; the storm is moving at 12 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph.
