Nora Sandigo is legal guardian to hundreds of young U.S. citizens born to illegal immigrants who have been deported from the United States.
June 7, 2014 Claudia Fonseca extends guardianship of her children, Yardley Vanegas, 5, left, and Shirley Vanegas, 8, to Nora Sandigo, whose husband, Reymundo, looks on. The signing of legal papers took place in Miami during a lunch that Sandigo organized for children for whom she has guardianship. The children were born in the United States to illegal immigrants from Latin America. Sandigo founded the nonprofit advocacy organization American Fraternity, which helps families with living expenses, food and legal services. She is legal guardian to more than 800 U.S.-citizen children for whom her organization has made living arrangements so that they can remain in the United States if one or both parents are deported. Fonseca’s husband was deported back to Nicaragua four years ago. Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post Buy Photo
