They were famous folk singers, scientists and a best-selling writer. They were also communists. Who were the most influential? Harvey Klehr of Emory University, author of “The Secret World of American Communism,” created this list, in no particular order.
Earl Browder Leader of the U.S. Communist Party from the early 1930s until his expulsion in 1945. Under his guidance, the party reached its peak membership of nearly 100,000 and developed influence in key sectors of American life. Collaborated with Soviet intelligence agencies; expelled after Soviet criticism for minimizing the role of the party.
