ABC News reported that the staffer who is the mother of former California governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s fifth child is Mildred Baena. As Jen Chaney explained:
ABC News has reported that Mildred Patricia Baena — who the network says worked as a housekeeper for the family of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver — is the mother of the former California governor’s fifth child.
The Washington Post has not confirmed the name of the child’s mother.
The network says Baena worked for the family for more than 20 years. As previously reported, she left the job in January. The child — who has not been identified — is now 14, according to the ABC News report.
Schwarzenegger confirmed Tuesday in a statement that he had fathered a love child with a household staffer more than a decade earlier. As AP reported:
He’s one of the most famous people on the planet, a two-term governor of California, a movie star and a former world champion bodybuilder with a profile so huge that just one name, Arnold, instantly identifies him to almost everyone.
Yet somehow, for more than a decade, Arnold Schwarzenegger managed to keep an incredible secret from the public and his wife, prominent former TV journalist and Kennedy heiress Maria Shriver: that he fathered a child with a woman on his household staff more than a decade ago.
The revelation came Tuesday, just a week after Schwarzenegger and Shriver announced they had separated.
“I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family,” Schwarzenegger wrote in a statement. “There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”
Hours later, Shriver also released a statement: “This is a painful and heartbreaking time. As a mother, my concern is for the children. I ask for compassion, respect and privacy as my children and I try to rebuild our lives and heal. I will have no further comment.”
Many have reacted with shock that the actor-turned-politician managed to keep the affair and child a secret for so long. As Reliable Source explained:
“It’s almost mindboggling that information like this did not become public over his political career,” said veteran California GOP strategist Dan Schnur, who now teaches at the University of Southern California. “If this had come out when he was running for governor, he wouldn’t have gotten elected.”
Yet somehow Schwarzenegger, his lover and whoever else knew about the baby managed to keep the secret for at least a decade. Political consultant James Carville called it “stunning” that this never bubbled up. “I would not be surprised if a lot of money changed hands,” he told us.
Which is the critical point for Steve Mindel, an expert on California family law.
Mindel said he suspects that a DNA test was performed to establish paternity (the staffer was married to another man when the child was born), and then Schwarzenegger made child-support arrangements.
“I can’t even fathom that he has a checkbook and writes checks for, say, the gardener,” Mindel said. Average child support from a “high net-worth individual” like the former movie star would be $15,000 to $30,000 a month, which means it’s highly likely that a business manager or accountant would be aware of the child, even if his wife Maria Shriver was not.
