Family of 5 found dead in apparent murder-suicide near Dallas

A family of five is dead in Navarro County, Tex., in a case that authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide. Deputies and medical personnel found the victims, Israel Alvarez, Guadalupe Ronquilo-Ovalle, and their three sons, dead in their home near Dallas:

The sheriff said Monday that all five had gunshot wounds to the upper torso and a .22-caliber semiautomatic long rifle was recovered from the scene.

Navarro County Sheriff Elmer Tanner says a Spanish-speaking male called 911 around 7 p.m. Sunday night to report that several members of his family were dead at a home in Rice, 40 miles southeast of Dallas. . . .

“I don’t care where you are. Any time there’s five losses of lives in one location, that’s shocking and traumatic,” said Tanner. “It doesn’t make any difference where you are. It’s a horrible, horrible thing to see, witness or be a part of.”

The death investigation is confined to inside the home.

“As far as looking for a suspect, what I’m saying at this point in time is that we are concentrating our efforts on the investigation at the residence,” Tanner said. “We have not seen anything yet that makes us think we need to go outside this location.”

Tanner told NBC 5’s Catherine Ross that the home is known to law enforcement.

Authorities had visited the house previously, according to the Dallas Morning News. Alvarez was arrested earlier this month on an assault charge after his wife told police that he had pushed her. She was not injured in that incident, and Alvarez was released after spending two days in jail and paying a $367 fine.

Tanner did not say who investigators believe to have been the shooter.
