Talk about turning your weaknesses into strengths.

Gweneviere Mann lost her short-term memory after brain surgery to remove a tumor. As part of her therapy — a way of restructuring her life in a healthy, active way — she started distance running with her boyfriend (now husband), Yasir Salem.

In an interview with Women’s Health magazine — an interview she assured the reporter she would forget in a few hours — Mann, 45, says staying motivated through her first marathon was a challenge that she was unusually well equipped to meet. “It was really wonderful to have memory problems!” she said. “Whenever I forgot how long we’d been running, I’d ask Yasir, and every time he said, ‘Oh, only 15 minutes.’ ”

She spoke before last week’s New York City Marathon, the sixth the couple has run together. Mann, who finished 47,635th, actually ran for just shy of 6 hours and 29 minutes.
