1. Pakistan and India Floods, September 2014.From Sept. 2 through 15, monsoon rains drove disastrous flooding in India and Pakistan, resulting in some 648 deaths and an estimated $18 billion in losses in the two countries. Most of the deaths were in Pakistan after several provinces experienced rainfall levels as high as 26.3 inches. According to reinsurance firm Aon Benfield, this was “the fifth consecutive year that Pakistan has experienced a billion dollar flood event.”Arif Ali/AFP via Getty Images
