Martin Luther King Jr. Day: What’s open, what’s closed

The presidential inauguration and the federal Martin Luther King Jr. holiday both fall on Monday. Here’s what’s open and what’s closed Jan. 21:


• Most banks

• Federal government offices

• Post offices (No mail delivery except for Express Mail)

• Courts (Except for adult arraignments and new juvenile referrals in the District)


• District: Meters not enforced. Holiday regulations with rush hours lifted. For inaugural street closures, go to

• Maryland: No parking fees except for New Carrollton garage, National Harbor, and in Anne Arundel and Howard counties.

• Virginia: Meters not enforced in Arlington County and the City of Alexandria. HOV restrictions lifted.


• District: No trash or recycling pickup. Pickups slide to the next day through the end of the week. No leaf collection. Transfer station closed.

• Maryland: Regular trash and recycling pickup. Montgomery pickups slide one day to the end of the week. Montgomery Transfer Station closed. Landfills open, except in Anne Arundel County.

• Virginia: Regular trash and recycling pickup in Arlington and Fairfax Counties. Monday pickup will occur on Tuesday in the City of Fairfax and the City of Alexandria. Landfills open.


• District: Open at owner’s discretion.

• Maryland: Closed.

• Virginia: Closed.


• District: Closed.

• Maryland: Closed.

• Virginia: Closed.


• District: Closed.

• Maryland: Closed.

• Virginia: Closed.


• District: Closed.

• Maryland: Closed.

• Virginia: Closed.


• Metrorail will open at 4 a.m. and close at 2 a.m. Rush hour service will operate from 4 a.m. until 9 p.m. Yellow line trains will operate between Huntington and Gallery Place only. Three Metrorail stations will be closed Inauguration Day: Smithsonian, Archive and Mount Vernon Square. The four Metrorail stations closest to the Capitol should only be used by those with Inauguration tickets. They are: Union Station, Judiciary Square, Capitol South and Federal Center SW. Metrobus service will operate on a regular weekday schedule, with early PM rush hour. MetroAccess subscription trips canceled. For more information, go to

• ART routes 41, 51, 77 and 87 will run on a Saturday schedule and route 42 on a special schedule only. and route 53 will run on a weekday schedule.

• Fairfax Connector will run on a holiday weekday schedule.

• Ride On will run on a special modified holiday schedule.

• Dash will operate on a Saturday schedule.

• CUE will operate on a modified weekday schedule.

• The Bus will operate on a regular schedule.

• PRTC OmniRide will offer modified holiday service to Metro stops only.

• Loudoun Bus limited service to West Falls Church Metro station.

• MTA Commuter Bus and VRE will are not running.

• MARC will run reserved trains on special schedule only.
