Satellites: Explorer 1 Explorer 1 is attached to its Jupiter-C launch vehicle in January 1958. Explorer 1 was the first satellite launched into orbit by the United States. Its development predates NASA, which was founded in October 1958, but the satellite was designed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, now part of the space agency.
