A new exhibit called “The Evolving Universe” showcases a collection of dozens of shots from ground- and space-based telescopes.
A Baby Picture of the Universe This “baby picture of the universe” shows the patchwork of residual heat left over from the Big Bang – the event that created the universe. Obtained by NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, the image confirmed the Big Bang theory and measured the age of the universe at 13.7 billion years old. “This represented the end of a program of research that lasted 30 years,” said Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Proving the Big Bang and measuring the age of the universe “was a most amazing result,” said McDowell. “It was like, okay, here’s your Nobel Prize.” NASA Buy Photo
