Let’s get directly to the point, here: Pope Francis was presented with a pizza in Naples over the weekend. There is a video:

Yep,  Vincenzo Cacialli and Antonio Greco of Don Ernesto in Naples made a pizza, brought it to the Pope’s route through the city, jumped a barrier, and handed it to the Pope as his Popemobile sped past a cheering crowd. According to one of the owners, speaking to ABC, the pPope graciously accepted. “I think he was just joking. He said, ‘Thank you.’ How can I say in English … ‘I’ll have it later.'”

Here’s a close-up of the pizza, from the restaurant’s Instagram feed.

The color scheme is supposed to be reminiscent of the flag of Vatican City.

They’re very proud.

Vincenzo Cacialli, who goes by Enzo, told CNN that the experience was very moving for him:

“It’s really hard for me to understand what I managed to do. Giving a pizza you made with your own hands to the Pope is very emotional. It’s really hard for me to express the value of this gesture for a man we really love and value, for a beautiful person full of humanity.”

While it’s tempting to dismiss why these guys decided to hand-deliver a pizza to the Popemobile with a shrug and the word, “Neapolitans,” There’s almost certainly a more precise reason.

Weeks ago, Francis gave a candid interview to mark the March 13 anniversary of his election to the papacy. In it, he said there’s really one thing he misses about being Not The Pope:

“The only thing I would like is to go out one day, without being recognized, and go to a pizzeria for a pizza. . In Buenos Aires, I was a rover. I moved between parishes and certainly this habit has changed. . It has been hard work to change. But you get used to it. You find a way to get around: on the phone, or in other ways.”

There you go. The pope says he wants a pizza, and he gets one.

Then again, it doesn’t take a pope wishing for a pizza to make some believe the pontiff might enjoy such a gift. People like giving Pope Francis gifts.

A cursory search of the stream of images from the Vatican’s weekly general audience brings up another special delivery for Francis, two days before his pizza-wishing interview was published.
