A woman in the Chevy Chase area of the District poured liquid on a woman in a hijab, in an assault that D.C. police are investigating as a possible hate crime.

Police spokesman Hugh Carew said that the suspect, a white woman, approached the victim outside a Starbucks on the 5500 block of Connecticut Avenue NW at 10:39 p.m. on April 21. She shouted “Muslim piece of trash,” and briefly walked away, Carew said.

The Council on American Islamic Relations said in a press release that the suspect also told the victim she was voting for Donald Trump, whom she hoped would send “all of you terrorist Muslims out of this country.” Carew said the police report did not mention any political comments. He also did not know whether the two women knew each other prior to the encounter.

After shouting at the victim, the suspect then walked away briefly. When she returned, she poured an unknown liquid on the victim’s head, Carew said.

She is wanted for simple assault. Police released a video of the incident on Monday.
