The Washington PostDemocracy Dies in Darkness

What would a President Romney really do in education?

Given that Mitt Romney says one thing and then he says another (in the debate he said he wouldn’t cut education funding even though he has been supporting a budget that does just that), it isn’t easy to know just what he would do.

But in this article in the Phi Delta Kappan magazine, Rick Hess of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative Washington D.C. think tank, takes a shot at figuring it out.

Noting that education would be “a secondary concern” for a Republican president and that “some caution is required in “divining Romney’s core beliefs,”  he concludes: “The safe bet is that a President Romney would keep much of the same substantive agenda as Obama, but would do so with a lighter touch, less spending, and more emphasis on choice.

Hess does mention, of course, that one of the biggest areas where the two men disagree is on vouchers; Romney wants to create vouchers across the country and Obama doesn’t. It’s a big, big difference.
