In the you-can’t-make-up-this-stuff-category, an Arizona sheriff recruited actor Steven Seagal to train volunteers to be part of an armed posse to patrol Phoenix-area schools.

The effort is the brainchild of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who calls himself “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” in the wake of the December shootings of 20 children and six teachers in Newtown, Conn.

The training took place last weekend, the Associated Press reported, at a closed school where “sheriff’s SWAT members acted as shooters and teenagers played the part of students during mock scenarios involving up to three gunmen.” Steven Colbert did a segment on it on “The Colbert Report” in which he said, in part:

Filling our schools with gun-toting guys who have nowhere to be during work hours might give some parents pause but rest assured, mom and dad, these volunteer posses are getting top-notch training…  The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is an even worse actor. We know Hollywood violence is the real problem. Therefore it is also the solution. It’s just like fighting fire with fire. If your house is on fire, call an arsonist. He’ll know what to do.
