The death of the great actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has prompted a mountain of remembrances and condolences to his family, including this from the superintendent of Fairport Central School District in New York, where he attended Fairport High School outside Rochester and would return periodically to talk with students and faculty.

During high school Hoffman studied theater at the New York State Summer School of the Arts in Saratoga Springs, and attended New York University, where he studied drama.

Here is the message on the school district’s website:

The Fairport Central School District is saddened to have learned about the passing of former Fairport student Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Here is a message from Interim Superintendent William Cala, Ed.D.:

“It is with great sadness that we learn of the untimely death of our friend and former student Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Phil was an icon in Fairport not solely due to his incredible talent and recognized accomplishments on stage and in the movies, but rather due to his love of his alma mater and his willingness to return periodically to share his wit and wisdom. Phil was a member of our Fairport family who was inducted into the Wall of Fame in 2006 at Fairport High School. He will be terribly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, three children and his mother, Marilyn O’Connor.”

(Note: Hoffman was in a 15-year relationship with costume designer Mimi O’Donnell, with whom he had three children, but they were not married.)
