Ensembles at the Billboard Music Awards were even more eclectic than the mash-up of artists honored at the event, forming a chaotic chorus of appropriate to outrageous to boring and expected clothing choices.
The big personalities stayed in their comfort zones, even if those zones involve abstaining from pants (Madonna). Most opted for looks that have become their uniform of sorts as if stepping outside their costumes would dilute their personal brand. Would Psy even be recognizable to American audiences without round shades and a tuxedo jacket with over-sized lapels?
Justin Bieber seemed to be goading fashion critics who have before bashed the crotch line of his pants by wearing a pair that seemed to hang even lower yet fit tighter around his calves.
Taylor Swift reverted back to her sequined-clad mini dress days with a cobalt blue Zuhair Murad that, despite the flattering color and small cut-outs, was reminiscent of nearly all of her other short, shimmery frocks.
Jennifer Lopez also chose a golden Zuhair Murad gown with a plunging neckline and sheer skirt that similarly felt like a repeat performance.
Even Shania Twain’s lovely draped gown and voluminous hair was like a text-book cliche of how a country princess should appear at an awards show.
Perhaps the most pleasantly off-beat looks came from Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. Cyrus’s black and white Balmain jumpsuit was quirky, in keeping with the tone of the event, yet perfectly tailored and complementary to the mod-inspired style she has embraced as of late.
Gomez’s white Atelier Versace was flattering, with pops of visual interest in the neon neck and arm trims, as well as mesh cut-outs.
At first glance, Ke$ha appeared more refined than she has at any past awards show — until she turned to the side and a gigantic slit was revealed, exposing the entirety of her leg up to her derriere. Was this a double-dare to Gwyneth Paltrow who was recently in the news for exposing her gams at the premiere of “Iron Man”? Let’s just hope no one else sees it as a challenge.
