Steve Wilhite, inventor of the Graphic Image File, sent a shock wave across the Internet Tuesday night by declaring what he insists is the proper pronunciation of the format he invented more than 25 years ago. According to Wilhite: “It’s pronounced ‘JIF’ not ‘GIF'”

He delivered the news, via GIF of course, in lieu of his Webby Awards lifetime achievement acceptance speech. But does that really give him the authority to settle this debate? And even though some are calling for a pronunciation truce (no fun), we’d prefer to put it to a vote: Is it a hard “g” — like “gift” — or a soft “g”– like “giant”?

>>Make your case, how do you say “GIF”?
