After taking three months off to direct his first movie, Jon Stewart gleefully returned to Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” on Tuesday night, kissing his desk and professing his love to the audience.

“I’ve missed you so much,” he whispered. “You don’t know what it’s like out there in the real world — no one applauds every stupid little (expletive) thing you do.”

Stewart also invited out his temporary guest-host, John Oliver, and said he knew that Oliver would do an excellent job filling in for him. “What I didn’t know,” Stewart added, “is that Jon Oliver has dimples you could lose yourself in.”

Oliver appeared to bring Stewart up to speed on all the things he missed this summer: Paula Deen, Carlos Danger, etc. Then, Stewart learned what he would be talking about on that night’s show: Syria.
