In 2005, the American Film Institute celebrated its 100th anniversary by compiling the definitive list of the “most memorable” movie quotes of all time. Nine years later, statistician/design nerd Nathan Yau celebrated no occasion in particular by turning said movie quotes into charts — some puzzling, some cryptic, all of them pretty brilliant.
Yau has been working on the project since 2010, but only recently wrapped it up and posted charts of all 100 quotes to his blog, Flowing Data. He also gave me permission to reprint a few, so naturally, I’ve turned it into a maddening movie trivia game. Try guessing the quote that goes with each one — the answers are written in white below each chart, so you can highlight the space between the parenthesis to view them.
Answer: [“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn."]
Answer: [“I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse."]
Answer: [“You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am."]
Answer: [“Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore."]
Answer: [“Here’s looking at you, kid."]
Answer: [“Go ahead, make my day."]
Answer: [“All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up."]
Answer: [“May the force be with you."]
Answer: [“I love the smell of napalm in the morning."]
Answer: [“I see dead people."]
Answer: [“You had me at ‘hello.'"]
Fun game, right? You can check out all 100 charts on Yau’s blog. His favorites are No. 29 and No. 79.
