HBO will develop Black & Sexy TV’s “The Couple”

HBO is is developing “The Couple” a popular Web series produced by Black & Sexy TV, the creators of “Hello Cupid,” “Roomieloverfriends” and “That Guy.”

“The Couple,” created by Jeanine Daniels and Dennis Dortch, and directed by Dortch, stars Numa Perrier and Desmond Faison. Perrier confirmed via e-mail that Spike Lee will be executive producer of the new venture.

Black & Sexy has specialized in creating series that explore sexuality and relationships between young black people, and it’s resonated. The first episode of “The Couple” has been viewed more than 200,000 times. Daniels and Dortch also surpassed the $25,000 goal they set for a Kickstarter campaign to turn “The Couple” into a movie. The network’s Twitter mentions were filled with congratulations when the news was reported by Jet and Madame Noire.

Black & Sexy teamed with “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” creator Issa Rae to produce “Roomieloverfriends.” Rae is currently writing a comedy series with Larry Wilmore (“The Daily Show”) for HBO. Perrier is also directing Rae in a Lorraine Hansberry biopic, still in development. Rae will be playing Nina Simone.

“Our vision is to become a household name with a full slate of original programming,” Perrier said. “Select TV partnerships with companies we respect and understand us creatively are one of the pieces to building that.”
