Public School

Not since Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler sold out their thesis designs has the fashion world been so enamored of a young duo of designers as it has been with Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, the wunderkinds behind Public School. (Their debut runway presentation Sunday drew the likes of Anna Wintour.) With their explicitly boyish sportswear for men and women, exaggerated beanies and stark, white-soled sneakers, the duo certainly designs for the urban dweller. The menswear, in particular, including this layering of knits, is a sight to be seen.

Yigal Azrouël

Yigal Azrouel’s black pieces were more sexy than somber, thanks to the playful use of leather. Check out, for example, the leather dress with basket-weave bodice, at right. The raglan sleeve keeps the shift ultra-youthful.

Diane Von Furstenberg

Perhaps the lone remaining grande dame of the fashion world, Diane Von Furstenberg, has spent the week celebrating the 40th anniversary of her career-making (and career-appropriate) wrap dress. The silhouette remains a staple in Washington’s socialite circles, so we couldn’t leave it out of our roundups: This wrap came in a bold motif that made us swoon (just look at this stunner as a coat that will get you noticed everywhere).

Opening Ceremony

Minimalism, winter whites, and oversized silhouettes were everywhere in the first few days of New York Fashion Week. Opening Ceremony seemed to seize on all of the trends in this stunner of a mini-dress in an artsy fingerprint. With the turtleneck and platform boots, this little number seems built for the downtown gallerina (or, you know, this reporter).

Thakoon’s pretty florals — in an eye-popping pink that also informed the backdrop to the show — read more spring than fall, but we could see this doing bang-up business in feminine Washington.
