Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir were a smash hit in Sochi, becoming an unexpected power duo at the Winter Olympics as figure skating commentators. Naturally, NBC decided to capitalize on their recent popularity by quickly signing the pair up for Oscar red carpet duty.
Though their main segment will air on “Access Hollywood” Monday night, Lipinski and Weir stopped by the “Today” show in the morning to give a quick rundown of their fashion best and worst.
Cate Blanchett, whom Lipinski called a “golden, glittering, beautiful woman” coming down the red carpet, though she wasn’t sure if the color of her gown translated on TV. “She looked gorgeous,” she gushed. Weir agreed: “As my spirit animal, she didn’t disappoint me.”
Lupita Nyong’o: Lipinski loved the color, adding, “She’s usually in more structured, classic, clean lines and this was that princess moment.” Weir agreed she looked incredible in the full, “balletic” dress, but had one complaint: “The only thing I didn’t like was the headband. We’re not in gym class. We’re at the Oscars,” he sniffed.
Chrissy Teigen. One of Lipinski’s favorites, thought the color was fantastic.
Camila Alves, Matthew McConaughey’s wife: “Her body is incredible. The way she posed?” Lipinski said.
Jennifer Lawrence: Weir is a fan, and loved the lower peplum. “Everyone’s doing it very high, and she went low,” he said, adding that the “milky skin, the hair, everything was just so working for me.”
Tara Lipinski: Well, this one was obvious. Weir raved about his co-host’s red carpet look, calling her “phenomenal, ethereal, very very pure” and old Hollywood style.
Kate Hudson: “Stunning.”
Sandra Bullock: They called her classic, beautiful; but the unfortunate word, “safe.”
Jada Pinkett Smith: Lipinski thought the pink frock didn’t really work, and the fabric was too much for her tiny frame.
Emma Watson: Yikes, Weir did not like this one. “Emma Watson did not impress me,” he said. “I felt like she had dressed up to go to school or to clap erasers or something that was anything but the Oscars.”
Film critic Ann Hornaday: The Oscars go according to plan
TV critic Hank Stuever: Happily wasting too much time at Ellen’s easy-does-it Oscars show
