Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have decided to break up — or as Paltrow calls it, they have consciously uncoupled. Paltrow announced the news on her lifestyle Web site Goop.

“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate,” Paltrow wrote Monday evening in a post titled “Conscious Uncoupling.” “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.”

The Oscar-winning actress, 41, and Coldplay frontman, 37, have been married since December 2003; they have two children, Apple, 9, and Moses, 7. The couple, a favorite target of the tabloids, has frequently been the subject of divorce rumors.

However, celebrity expert antennas were very much up at the Golden Globes, when the couple made a rare appearance together: Martin was nominated for Best Original Song for Coldplay track “Atlas” in “Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” and Paltrow was by his side at the ceremony. The fact that Paltrow showed up was a big deal in itself, as they are very infrequently photographed together. “What could it all mean?” that tabloids wondered out loud.

Their body language, as MTV Tumblr pointed out, was “clearly got into an argument in the limo on the way here.”

In her statement, Paltrow — often mocked for her earnest, yet oblivious tips about ways to live a better life — says that she and Martin “are closer than we have ever been.” As usual with celebrity break-ups, the end of Paltrow’s message focused on her kids:

We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.
