Michael Strahan is in talks to join ABC’s “Good Morning America,” he confirmed on the network’s other morning show, “Live! With Kelly and Michael.”
Two important facts to note up front: First, he’s not leaving co-host Kelly Ripa in the lurch on “Live!”; this “GMA” gig would only be on a part-time basis. Second, he discovered the news of his new gig when he checked his phone after a “Captain America” screening Tuesday night, so stars really are just like us. (The Internet lit up when CNN reported that “GMA” was planning to add Strahan as another shot of testosterone to its morning show after Josh Elliott’s departure this week. He was replaced by Amy Robach.)
“It’s somewhat surprising,” Strahan, a former NFL star and actor, said Wednesday morning. “Like, I went and had a meeting and talked about the possibility of doing something there … then I got out of the ‘Captain America’ screening and I’m looking at my messages, and next think you know, I’m on ‘Good Morning America’!”
“So, are you going to do it?” Ripa asked, semi-rhetorically. This would be a third job for Strahan, who already flies back and forth to Los Angeles during football season to appear on “Fox NFL Sunday.”
Strahan somewhat dodged the question. “I don’t know. You know what? [If you] read the papers, I am,” he said, then quickly segued into reassurance mode: “But this is what I do. This is me. This is my home right here; like, I love you! So no matter what, I go nowhere.”
The two bantered back and forth about pulling double duty on two TV shows. (Like Ripa did in her “Hope and Faith” sitcom days.) Ripa reiterated that everyone on the show was very supportive of Strahan, no matter what he chose to do.
“I want everyone to know and I want you to know that no matter what this is my number one priority. You are my number one priority,” he told Ripa. “I love what I do. And I would never do anything to jeopardize the quality of what we do here and the enjoyment of what we do here.”
“That is exactly how we rehearsed it backstage,” Ripa said — and no, we could not tell at all if she was joking.
