Counting Crows singer Adam Duritz turns 50 today. AARP the Magazine has taken notice.

Baltimore-born singer/songwriter/dreadlock-wearer Adam Duritz is now 50. To celebrate, AARP gift-wrapped a magazine cover for him.

Brief history lesson for the kids: Counting Crows broke through 21 years ago with “Mr. Jones,” a jangle-pop song about fame. The song happened to make Duritz famous. (Dating various celebrities didn’t hurt.)

The Northern California band had several other hit singles, the biggest of which was “A Long December.”

Random trivia: I once sat behind Duritz at an R.E.M. concert at Shoreline Amphitheater in California, and I couldn’t really see because he had an enormous hat perched atop those iconic locks.

(But happy birthday anyway!)
