Comedian and TV personality Joan Rivers, 81, is in stable but critical condition after she was rushed to a hospital following throat surgery at a clinic, according to reports.
E!, which airs the comedian’s long-running show “Fashion Police,” reported that Rivers “stopped breathing while undergoing a minor endoscopic procedure at a medical clinic.” TMZ, which broke the news, said the procedure was vocal cord-related. Someone called 911 citing a “cardiac or respiratory arrest,” according to the site, and Rivers was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

A spokesman for the hospital confirmed that Rivers was being treated: “Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available.”
Rivers has been busy working these past few months. Just this week, she was on E! for a 90-minute special “Fashion Police” tackling all the outfits from the Emmy Awards and VMAs. She’s been making the rounds this summer promoting her new book, “Diary of a Mad Diva,” which included a stop in Washington and also a now-infamous walk-off during a CNN interview.
She’s also been filming her Web series, “In Bed With Joan,” while she and her daughter, Melissa, just wrapped the fourth season of their WE tv reality show in May.
Rivers is scheduled to perform several weeks in Britain in shows called “Quick…Before They Close the Lid (Seriously…this one could be IT!).”
Many celebrities sent their get-well wishes for Rivers, including LeAnn Rimes (who made headlines for being on Rivers’s talk show this week) and her fellow NBC Universal stars.
