Most pools post one familiar sign: “No diving.” At the Pacific Regency Hotel in Malaysia, they may have to tweak that sign to include BASE jumping as well.
Last month, John Van Horne and two of his friends were in town for the annual Kuala Lumpur Tower BASE jumping event. They decided to end the weekend by launching themselves from the thousand-foot-high tower and surprising guests at a nearby hotel by landing in the rooftop pool.
“There were a few people at the party who knew we were coming in,” said Van Horne, who has been BASE jumping for 10 years.
Fortunately for the jumpers, the pool was empty and their aim precise.
“Your best-case scenario if you miss the pool is a 200-foot-high tree,” said Van Horne. “Around the hotel, there was nowhere to land, no open areas.”
