Well, here’s something you don’t see every day.
Daniel Radcliffe got to talking about rap with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday’s “Tonight Show.” The “Harry Potter” star said he was a big fan of the genre — “which,” he noted, “surprises a lot of people about me.”
Also surprising, if not downright astonishing: Radcliffe then attempted to perform a song by the underground rap duo Blackalicious … and he wasn’t terrible!
Quite an accomplishment, given that Blackalicious specializes in high-degree-of-difficulty hip-hop that’s long on tongue-twisting lyrics.
The song Radcliffe performed — “Alphabet Aerobics” — is typical of the duo’s catalogue. Just check out the first few couplets, via Rap Genius:
Artificial amateurs, aren’t at all amazing
Analytically, I assault, animate things
Broken barriers bounded by the bomb beat
Buildings are broken, basically I’m bombarding
Casually create catastrophes, casualties
Canceling cats, got their canopies collapsing
It gets trickier — and faster — from there.
Writing about the 1999 song, AllMusic.com, which calls Blackalicious frontman Gift of Gab “one of the very finest MCs to ever pick up a microphone,” noted: “By the time he hits x, y, and z, he is spitting out lyrics with astonishing verbal virtuosity.”
You can watch the full Radcliffe performance here.
By the by, in a recent Reddit AMA, Radcliffe was asked if he had a favorite musician or song at the moment. This was his rap-free answer:
I’m listening to a lot of Jamie T’s music lately, his new album’s great… what else have I been listening to? First Aid Kits, I”m really into them right now. I’ve also rediscovered somebody around called Sister Rosetta Tharp, and you should all – she is just an amazing singer from the 1940’s and 50’s, way ahead of her time, great voice.
