Amy Schumer already got in trouble once with the One Direction fandom. Yet on her show Tuesday night, Schumer aired a boy band parody video that skewers a song suspiciously close to One Direction’s hit “What Makes You Beautiful.”
In case you missed the inescapable ‘female empowerment’ anthem in 2011, the band goes on and on about an all-natural girl who lights up the room every time she walks in, yet hasn’t realized just how beautiful she is. (“You’re insecure, don’t know what for/You’re turning heads when you walk through the door/Don’t need makeup to cover up/Being the way that you are is enough.”)
Guess what happens in Schumer’s version, called “Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup?” Well, the swooning boy band members quickly change their tune on the fresh-faced look after seeing their girl (a.k.a. Schumer) sans cosmetics. After all, how much work could it possibly be?!
“Hold up girl, we spoke too soon/with this whole ‘no makeup’ tune,” the quartet sings over an (admittedly incredibly catchy) pop beat. “You’ll be the hottest girl in the nation/with just a touch of foundation.”
Then the spoken-word verse: “It’s like I tore up the shag carpet assuming there were hardwood floors underneath. But it turned out to be just dirty linoleum. These are just metaphors, girl…but they are about your face.”
Will One Direction fans take it personally, even though she doesn’t name names? They were already upset about Schumer’s zinger at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month, where she joked about Zayn Malik’s departure. “After months of speculation, Hillary Clinton finally announced she’s taking Zayn’s spot in One Direction.” Naturally, Directioners were livid.
