Let’s just not: Halloween costumes to avoid this week

Here are five of the most controversial Halloween costumes this year. (Erin O'Connor/The Washington Post)

We’re going to trust that most people have long-since learned the lesson of avoiding “cultural appropriation” Halloween costumes — the fancy word for being kind of racist by putting on another culture to get a laugh out of strangers at the bar.

Argue about it all you’d like, but wearing a tribal headdress or painting your face a different skin tone are sure to get you some serious side-eye this Halloween.

(Or, if you’re a celebrity, some seriously bad press.)

In a politically correct, anything-can-go-viral world, thinking twice about your costume goes beyond making sure you’re wearing your God-given skin color. Like that time Snooki dressed up as a missing girl on a milk carton, or when Lilly Allen thought it would be funny to dress as the doctor accused of sexually assaulting Kesha — don’t they have friends who would say, “Let’s just not?”

This Halloween, here’s the Post’s version of “Let’s just not”: the costumes that are too offensive, predictable or overly eye-roll-inducing to work for anyone.
