Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint during Paris Fashion Week, with thieves stealing more than $10 million worth of jewelry from the reality star, according to media reports.
Authorities were looking for five suspects, but the AP reported that only two of the men forced their way into the apartment where Kardashian was staying.
Kardashian was “badly shaken, but physically unharmed,” after the incident, her spokeswoman said in a statement to CNN, which first reported the incident.
Word of the incident spread overnight after Kardashian’s husband, rapper Kanye West, abruptly left a concert Sunday because of a “family emergency.”
West was in the middle of performing “Heartless” at the Meadows Music and Arts Festival in New York when he suddenly said, “I’m sorry, family emergency, I have to stop the show.” According to video that surfaced on Twitter, the crowd reacted with the confusion you might expect.
Kardashian had been staying at a discreet mansion frequented by celebrities, according to Reuters. The building’s concierge let the thieves in around 2:30 a.m., and he led the thieves to Kardashian’s apartment while handcuffed and held at gunpoint, two police sources told AP. The assailants made their getaway on bikes.
Kardashian’s bodyguard wasn’t at the apartment, but her stylist was, according to AP. The stylist alerted police.
Police discovered the night guard on the staircase, with his hand and feet bound, a police source told Reuters.
The mansion, with its nine luxury apartments, has hosted the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna in the past, according to Le Figaro. The nondescript building, near the Madeleine church in the city’s eighth arrondissement, has no signs or website; securing a reservation is all done through word of mouth.
After speaking with investigators, Kardashian left France aboard a private jet, Reuters reported. She landed in New Jersey on Monday, and traveled by motorcade to her Manhattan apartment flanked by heavy security, AP reported. Video posted by TMZ late Monday morning showed Kardashian and West together in New York City.
Kardashian has been making headlines in Paris the past several days from Fashion Week, along with her sisters, Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, and their mother, Kris Jenner. People magazine reported that Kardashian and West’s 3-year-old daughter, North, and 10-month-old son, Saint, were not involved in the incident.
Kardashian’s family has since been placed under police protection at the George V hotel, AP reported.
The Paris mayor, Anne Hidalgo, said Kardashian would “always be welcome in Paris.” Hidalgo’s statement insisted that the incident “in no way calls into question police work or security of public space” in Paris.
Hidalgo also called on politicians on the left and right to show “responsibility” ahead of next year’s presidential election in France and not exploit the theft for political gain.
“In a complicated context for tourism, in which boosting attendance must be the priority of all, using this incident for polemical purposes would amount to directly harming the tourism sector, which represents 500,000 jobs” in the Paris region, Hidalgo said, according to AP.
Back in the United States, the National Rifle Association posted a series of sarcastic tweets about the robbery at gunpoint and France’s strict gun laws.
The NRA insisted it wasn’t trolling reality TV star, but was rather expressing “concern, as well as confusion that criminals in Paris were armed in the first place.”
Kardashian has publicly supported greater gun control measures. She mentioned the issue specifically when explaining why she would be voting for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in this year’s presidential election. Earlier this year, she met with the families of people killed by gun violence.
