It took all of a week, but the unofficial start of the 2020 presidential election is here. Just thank The Rock.
On Tuesday, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, 44, was named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, an honor that generally goes to a star with a project to promote, or an image repair problem. Since everyone loves The Rock, as you might have guessed, he has a movie coming out next week (Disney’s “Moana”).
Anyway, the professional wrestler turned “Fast and the Furious” movie star has been hinting about a future presidential run for months — his fans really, really want him to run. He’s reportedly a registered Republican and has attended conventions for both parties; he spoke at the RNC in 2000. In this week’s People cover story, he appears to be campaigning already, saying he’s actually completely serious about a potential presidential campaign.
“I used to say it jokingly but every time I was asked, it was with a real genuine interest. And it was very earnest,” he said. “And so I started to really think. Could I make a difference? Could I surround myself with really brilliant people to help me make decisions? Do I care about this country? And when the answers continued to come up yes, then I thought, there’s a good chance. Yeah, one day. Then we’ll do another interview like this.”
That’s right, everyone — The Rock, currently the world’s highest-paid actor, and the man People boasts is “sweet, smart and sculpted” — could be your next celebrity candidate. As he put it to Vanity Fair earlier this week, “This past election shows that anything can happen.”
