The eyeroll to end all eyerolls happened Tuesday night on CNN, as Anderson Cooper grilled White House counselor Kellyanne Conway over President Trump’s stunning and abrupt firing of FBI Director James B. Comey. Cooper questioned the administration’s inconsistent statements about Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation — “Now your White House is saying that what he did was wrong, but previously as a candidate, Donald Trump was saying that was the right thing,” Cooper noted — and Conway swiftly dismissed his point.

“You’re conflating two things that don’t belong together,” she said, and then proceeded to do exactly that: “Thanks for the trip down memory lane,” she added. “I was on your show often last fall saying we were going to win Michigan, and how we were going to do it. So that was fun.”

Cooper made his exasperation known.

His gesture instantly resonated with viewers and pundits who flocked to Twitter to proclaim that Cooper’s eyeroll was the unbridled snark they so desperately needed — a vicarious release of pent-up frustration.

Meanwhile, Cooper pressed on, asking Conway why it wasn’t fair game to refer to Trump’s remarks as a candidate: “So that person doesn’t exist anymore, candidate Donald Trump? That’s a fictional character we no longer are allowed to refer to? We can now only refer to the Donald Trump who exists today?”

“Anderson, I’ll ignore how unkind that is,” Conway replied, and it looked for a moment like Cooper might offer up an encore eyeroll, but settled instead for a dumbfounded head shake.
