Kevin Spacey on Sunday responded to accusations that he made a sexual advance on a minor, saying that he didn’t remember the encounter with actor Anthony Rapp but apologized “if I did behave as [Rapp] describes.”
The veteran actor also publicly came out as gay in the same statement he used to address Rapp’s allegations. “This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life,” Spacey said.
In an interview with BuzzFeed published Sunday night, Rapp said he was in Spacey’s apartment for a party in 1986, and at the end of the night, Spacey picked Rapp up, placed him on a bed and climbed on top of him, making an advance. The two had known each other for their Broadway work; Rapp, a child actor at the time, was 14, and Spacey was 26, BuzzFeed reported.
Reports detailing allegations of ongoing sexual harassment and abuse by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein prompted Rapp to speak publicly about Spacey; he had told close friends about the encounter throughout the 1990s and 2000s, BuzzFeed reported.
“I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out, to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me,” Rapp said in a statement. “Everything I wanted to say about my experience is in that article, and I have no further comment about it at this time.”
The publication notes requests for comment from Spacey went unanswered. Then hours later, Spacey posted his statement on Twitter, writing “I’m beyond horrified to hear his story.”
“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago,” Spacey continued. “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
Known to be intensely private, Spacey then for the first time publicly addressed years of speculation and rumors about his sexual orientation.
“As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women,” Spacey wrote. “I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.”
