How do I request an obituary or submit a death notice?
The Post writes news obituaries about individuals who lived in the Washington area for a large part of their lives — generally at least 20 uninterrupted years. Obituary subjects also will have had substantial involvement in their communities through employment or membership in religious, civic or other organizations. News obituaries do not include funeral or memorial information and cannot be published more than a month after a person’s death. As these are considered news articles, there is no charge.

To request a news obituary, please use our online form. After submitting, please call the obituaries department at 202.334.6477 to confirm receipt and arrange for an interview. A family member must be able to provide information about the medical cause of death and other pertinent facts regarding the person’s career, community involvement, marriages and survivors.

News obituaries are distinct from paid death notices. A paid death notice is a classified advertisement that usually includes funeral or memorial information. Costs vary according to the length of a death notice and whether a photograph is desired. Death notices can be placed by calling the Classified Advertising department at 202.334.4122 or e-mailing
