WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 16: On the 16th day of a government shutdown with debt default hours away, the sun rises on the US Capitol dome, as a solution is still to be found concerning the federal government shutdown and raising of the debt ceiling, on Capitol Hill Wednesday October 16, 2013. To say Americans are fed up with their national legislature would appear to be a significant understatement based on a new Washington Post-ABC News poll which finds that the budget battles and partial government shutdown have damaged the Republican Party’s image and underlined divisions within the GOP.

As Dan Balz and Scott Clement write, “The survey highlights just how badly the GOP hard-liners and the leaders who went along with them misjudged the public mood. In the aftermath, eight in 10 Americans say they disapprove of the shutdown. Two in three Republicans or independents who lean Republican share a negative view of the impasse. And even a majority of those who support the tea party movement disapprove.”

We’ll start with FDRHSTLBJ, apparently of the Democratic persuasion, who wrote, “In the past 12 years the Republicans and their policies have given the nation it’s biggest national security failure, a blown war in Afghan[i]stan, a needless trillion dollar war in Iraq, a financial crisis, an economic crisis, a lowered national credit rating, a dysfunctional do-nothing but attempt to repeal the ACA congress, record wealth and income inequality, the legalization of a money corrupted political system and a needless government shutdown. They threw in making us into a laughingstock in the eyes of the world for free. That’s what the GOP has done for the U.S.A. and it’s about time people started to realize what a disaster they have been for our great nation.”

Time4MoreAction said, “Sometimes I feel sorry for Tea Party/GOP people….they say some of the dumbest things I have ever heard…to the point w[h]ere you can’t even argue with them because their comment is quite bizarre but the feeling of empathy for them because you know they truly believe it and you realize that America is in trouble when we have such ignorant passionate people that act like suicide bombers.”

esmith4102 wrote, “Like the GOP said during the last Presidential election: ‘we don’t pay attention to polls!’” That’s true and while not intellectually tenable, it is a consequence of being “a party of stupid”! So like the ostrich who buries its head in the sand, the only thing that really matters is its own narrow and self-contained world.”

HMW011 offered that “I have worked in the government on and off for 38 years. During that time I became quite familiar with requisitions, bidding, awarding contracts etc. It is a time consuming process with bean-counters and pencil-necked bureaucrats every step of the way. The simplest request takes months, not days or hours. In less than 8 hours of the shutdown, “miraculously”, professionally printed, 3X4 foot signs appeared all over the country in the tens of thousands saying – “This [park, facility, etc. with custom logos and current dates] closed due to government shutdown.” There has not been a government shutdown in 17 years. These signs were designed, specifications were determined, signs were then requisitioned, bids were posted and vetted, and government contracts were awarded. The materials were then ordered and the signs manufactured and then distributed through U.S. mail or freight companies. This shutdown was orchestrated, and planned well in advance, at least 6-8 months ago. This goes right to the White House. But oh it’s the Republicans fault. This administration is nothing but a bunch of Chicago Thugs!”

Blublu said, “In the expected Republican revision of history, they are going to accuse Obamacare for the damage to the economy and the credit and credibility of the United States that they caused by their actions. They could have passed a clean CR and debt limit change weeks ago, but choose not to. What are they going to do in 3 months when another CR may be necessary and another debt limit will have to be approved? Except for statements from a few people, there is little that shows the Republicans have learned anything. Republican’s delusional world view is supported by their delusion that Obamacare is the source of the country’s problems.”

TheLogicalParty wrote, “Looks like the Heritage PAC is spending all their hard earned shutdown money on bloggers here.  Good thing they only have to buy one digital subscription for each handle, they can use multiple people to type on each one.”

Braultrl said, “The Tea Party in their quest to destroy America have brought shame on the GOP brand. According to the code of Bushido, the Samurais of Stupid must commit mass hari kari, by drinking one last toast of moonshine to Emperor Norquist and disemboweling themselves with a final vote to repeal Obamacare…”

But nycman suggested that  “GOPers can redeem thems[e]lves by passing Immigration reform, to take the focus of[f] their recent childish antics. The way I look it, this issue needs to be addressed, we know what the final answer will be, so why waste time and get people even more anti-republican , ( is that possible) ……………yes it is !!”

Psudziner wrote, “If there were truly a liberal media, no articles like this would’ve been published. Just like in poker, when you spot the sucker, you just let him keep playing until all his money is gone.”

MaggieMcguire added, “This poll, like the one from NBC a week or so ago are meaningless. First look at who conducted the poll. It was conducted by two major liberal extremist organizations, the WaPo, and ABC who could not put together a unbiased poll it they had to. Second, Obama and the Democrats are also having their credibility problems also, so just pointing at the Republicans is ignoring the facts. Finally, as we watch ObamaCare, and Obama himself, crash and burn the Republicans attempt to defund ObamaCare seems like it was a very good idea.”

We’ll close with BasicInstinct, who asked, “If the Republican Party falls in the polls, and FOX News viewers aren’t there to see it…does it make a sound?”
