In May, The Washington Post launched our user profile on Reddit, and the months since have been quite a ride.
We’ve hosted several Ask Me Anything sessions featuring journalists like Pulitzer Prize winner David Fahrenthold, the reporting trio (Stephanie McCrummen, Beth Reinhard and Alice Crites) who broke the story about Roy Moore’s sexual misconduct allegations and North Korea correspondent Anna Fifield.
We’ve made jokes, made some memes and helped an Alabama weatherman create one of the most popular AMAs in Reddit’s history. But we’ve mostly tried to be a part of the community, adding expertise, insight and additional context to discussions around some of the biggest stories of the year.
As a thank you to our followers, we’ve created a little gift for the loyal Reddit readers who read, discuss, debate, criticize and share our stories …
These “F5 o’clock” phone wallpapers. Click the album below to find four different resolutions to fit your phone screen. If the album doesn’t display, you can find the images here.
What exactly is F5 o’clock? Great question.
The F5 key is the keyboard shortcut for “refresh page” in many web browsers. During a stretch of time when news was breaking with regularity late in the day — stories like Michael Flynn’s discussions with Russian officials which led to his resignation and guilty plea, or Trump’s disclosure of highly classified information to Russian officials — Reddit users started joking that they were waiting for news to break at 5 p.m., refreshing their browsers or the r/politics subreddit to see if anything had posted. And the F5 o’clock meme was born.
To thank our readers and Reddit fans for their voracious news appetite and continued support, we had graphic designer J.J. Alcantara draw up these background images for your phone. Wherever you are, no matter what’s happening, it’s always F5 o’clock.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays from The Washington Post Reddit team.
