Two local developers have teamed up on a deal that will allow Harris Teeter to open a store as part of a mixed-use project at 965 Florida Ave. NW, near Howard University.

Harris Teeter has been interested in the site for more than a year and the two developers, the JBG Cos. and MRP, will combine some privately owned properties with a city-owned parcel that MRP has won the right to develop.

JBG is also building a Trader Joe’s store a few blocks west, on 14th Street NW that will open in late March. The Harris Teeter is likely to be at least two years from opening.

Howard University has long been promising to bring a grocery store to its students, but the school’s town center project has been delayed so many times that  grocers, seeing the apartment and restaurant boom in the area, have decided to sign on for competing projects nearby.
